Navigating the Path of Parenting: Overcoming Challenges as a Parent of a Neurodivergent Child
My journey started when I became a parent at 37. I thought being an older mum had given
me the life skills I needed, and being fiercely independent without close family support, I
was ready to face this wondrous new chapter. The initial feeling of euphoria fell hard when
differences were realised and diagnoses were made. Living as a parent of a neurodivergent
child was overwhelming, lonely, isolating and filled me with sadness. I felt hopeless for the
future and a failure as a parent.
Empowering Child Wellbeing and Parent Support
My child became my world, and my career took a new direction. After gaining a certificate in
children & services, I had the privilege of working for 9 years in a primary school, supporting
children with their learning and well-being. While working with parents and children, I saw a
large gap between GP and psychology and shared the frustrations of long wait lists,
navigating the NDIS system, and finding the right fit with service providers. I knew I could
help fill the gap and support people by unlocking their thinking, enabling them to find the
answers to move forward and realise their happiest life.
From Personal Growth to Empowering Others
The diversity of this experience highlighted that well-being is paramount and the foundation of learning and that parent well-being is integral to the well-being of the family unit. These
invaluable experiences, and the many inspiring people I met on the way, opened my eyes
and heart to the beautiful diversities of humanity broadened my knowledge and
understanding, empowered me as a parent and advocated for my child and allowed me to
take the path I always wanted to follow: supporting and empowering others.
